The purpose of this study was to compare the attribution propensity of mentally retarded children with that of normal children in the situation of success-failure among control matters and attribution propensity factors by mental age, chronological age, and sex, and surveyed 90 children who were seven years of mental age and ten years of chronological age.The results are as follows.
First, differences were found in the attribution propensity of the same mental age groups that mentally retarded children were attributed to the degree of task difficulty in the success situation and ability in the failure situation while normal children were attributed to effort in the success situation and the degree of task difficulty in the failure situation. These kinds of phenomena are more noticeable in the failure situation than the success situation.
Second, differences were found in the attribution propensity of the same chronological age groups that normal children were attributed to the difficulty of task while mentally retarded children were attributed to their own inability in the failure situation
Consequently, mentally retarded children were attributed to the degree of task difficulty in the success situation and ability in the failure situation while normal children were attributed to effort in the success situation and the degree of task difficulty in the failure situation.
Third, no differences were found in the attribution propensity according to sex except that female were attributed to the efforts in the failure situation than male in mentally retarded children and no differences were found in the attribution propensity between sex in normal children.
