인터넷과 월드 와이드 웹에 의한 사회 전반에서의 변화는 빠르게 진행되고 있으며 앞으로 이러한 진행은 더욱 가속화될 것으로 보인다. 또한 웹에서 제공되는 정보와 서비스의 양이 증가하고 종류가 다양해짐에 따라 이용자의 수와 그 계층이 확대되고 있어 효과적인 네비게이션을 위한 인터페이스 개발은 웹을 활성화하는데 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있다. 컴퓨터 소프트웨어에서 이미 오래전부터 사용되어 온 풀다운 메뉴는 최근 여러 웹사이트에서 신속한 이용자 네비게이션을 위해서 사용되고 있다. 본 연구는 웹에서 풀다운 메뉴의 네비게이션 효과를 분석하기 위하여 서로 다른 형태의 정보구조를 이용하여 이용자의 네비게이션을 탐색하였다. 그 이유는 일정한 정보구조에서 효과적인 메뉴디자인이 다른 정보구조와 결합했을 때도 효과적일 수 있다는 경험적 논의가 아직 이루어지지 못했기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 이를 위하여 세 가지 다른 형태의 정보구조와 풀다운 메뉴를 결합한 웹사이트를 실험에 사용하였으며, 55명의 대학생과 대학원생을 대상으로 구조적 정보탐색 수행 속도, 비구조적 정보탐색 수행 속도, 선호도, 이용도, 방향감 상실 등을 통하여 네비게이션 효과를 분석하였다.연구 결과, 비구조적 정보탐색 수행 속도에 있어서는 감소형 정보구조가 고정형 정보구조보다 더 효과적이었으며, 세 가지 이용자 태도 변인에서는 감소형 정보구조가 증가형 정보구조보다 더 효과적이었다. 이는 동일한 메뉴디자인이라 할지라도 정보구조의 형태에 따라 비구조적 정보탐색 수행과 이용자의 태도 변인에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 앞으로의 메뉴디자인 개발과 연구시 정보구조와의 관계를 고려하여야 할 것이다.

영어 초록

As the popularity and accessibility of the World Wide Web(Web) increases for education and training, effective navigation is becoming more and more critical to its utility. Even though many educational technologists have spent their energy developing effective Web-based instruction systems, it remains difficult to develop Web systems that can help users find the information effectively without experiencing disorientation problems and cognitive overload. Many Web sites are beginning to employ a pull-down menu since it provides the most versatile navigation mechanism without additional user's actions. Although the pull-down menu design has beenused in other computer applications, it is relatively new on the Web. Many Web sites have been adapting this menu design, with the assumption that users will be able to find information faster than with other designs. This study analyzed the navigation effect of the pull-down menu design with three hierarchical information structures(constant, increasing, and decreasing types). The navigation effect was measured by two information searching strategies(searching and browsing) and three users attitudinal measures(appeal, perceived usability, and perceived disorientation).Three Cyber-shopping malls were developed with the pull-down menu design and three information structures. Fifty-five undergraduate and graduate at mid-western university participated voluntarily in this study.The findings provide useful information for designing menu design and information structure when Web designers develop Web sites. The results of this study show that there exist better combinations of pull-down menu design and information structures in terms of the efficacy of browsing, the overall appeal of the site, the perceived usability and the users perceived disorientation. The overall results showed that decreasing information structure produced more effective browsing speed, appeal, perceived usability, and disorientation. Finally it is recommended that the Web designers or Web researchers should consider the two factors, menu design and information structure, when they design or study the effective navigation.
