Abstract
Pak T’ae-wŏn(1897-192D wrote and composed a song named yipyolga 이별가 which consists of three sections. Even though we do not know its melody, it was one of the songs of Pak T’ae-wŏn which was popular at that time. We know the translated words of the songs 「The Old Cabin in Kenturky」 and 「Clementine」 by Foster well. Pak T’ae-wŏn translated the words of the songs. While we know well his tranlated words, we rarely knew who he was. Furthermore, few of us know he was a pioneer of mixed chorus in Daegu. So in this article, I want to follow the trace of his musical accomplishments in Daegu as well as in Seoul. Although he did not leave many accomplishments, his activities were very important as it was the early period of western music, especially in Daegu.
The fundamental reason for inquiring into the life of Pak T’ae-wŏn is he sowed the seeds of western music in Daegu and they bore quite a few fruits. In other words, tracing back over the footsteps of Pak T’ae-wŏn is in itself finding out the seeds of chorus activities in Daegu In this article, I had an intensive inquiry into such accomplishments as the translating of foreign songs, solo recitals, and mixed chorus activities.
Although he did not work too much, it is important that he performed western music in early days of Daegu. In particular, he worked in the period that western music was introduced. Even though he left a few songs of his own and translated words, many people who had been influenced by him played a important role in the music of Korea. Some of them were his brother Pak T’ae-jun, Kim Mun-bo who held the first solo recital, and Hyŏn Che-myong who is the greatest star of western music of Korea.
It is not an exaggeration to say that he brought about such great results dispite the fact that he did not lead a long life or leave many accomplishments. It is rather regrettable that we have none of his photographs. We ought to remember such great musicians of Daegu as Pak T’ae-wŏn, Pak T’ae-jun, and Hyŏn Che-myŏng.
