본 연구는 팬클럽 활동 중 하나인 사회참여 활동에 참가한 청소년들이 어떤 경험을 하였고 경험의 의미는 무엇인지 탐색하기 위하여 심층면접 및 인터
뷰, 참여관찰 등의 질적 연구방법으로 수행하였다. 팬클럽 회원들의 봉사 및 기
부활동을 사회참여 활동으로 규정하였고, 사회참여 활동을 벌이고 있는 팬클럽
중 여성 아이돌 그룹 ‘소녀시대’의 팬클럽인 ‘시스터스’와 청소년 회원을 연구
대상으로 선정하였다. 연구자는 팬클럽 ‘시스터스’의 사회참여 활동에 직접 참
가하여 참여관찰을 실시하였으며, 사회참여 활동의 경험이 있는 청소년 7명을
심층면접 및 인터뷰하여 자료를 수집하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 팬클럽
에서 청소년의 사회참여 활동은 첫째, 동일시와 모방이라는 팬덤문화 특성을
드러내고 있다. 둘째, 스타의 이미지를 관리하는 서포트 활동이다. 셋째, 스타와
의 공동체적 신뢰관계를 통해 자발적이고 지속적인 참여가 가능하다. 넷째, 다
양한 봉사 및 기부활동의 경험을 가능하게 하였다. 다섯째, 일시적 현상이 아닌
문화실천의 주체로 발전할 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다. 여섯째, 가정과 학업, 경
제적 여건에서의 한계 그리고 참여의 제한이 나타난다. 일곱째, 여러가지 한계
와 제한에도 불구하고 자발적인 참여와 활동이 이루어지고 있다. 연구의 의의
는 첫째, 기존 청소년문화에 부여된 부정적 시각에 대하여 자발적이고 능동적
형태의 문화적 실체를 제공하였다. 둘째, ‘1세대 팬덤’과 달리 스타를 향유하는
방식의 변화를 보여주는 ‘2세대 팬덤’에 주목할 필요가 있다. 셋째, 청소년의 사
회참여에 대한 새로운 이해를 가능하게 하였다. 넷째, 사회참여에 있어서 청소
년의 실질적인 어려움을 개선하여 다양한 참여가 이루어질 수 있는 가능성을
모색하였다. 이처럼 팬클럽에서 사회참여 활동은 스타와 팬과의 관계 안에서
발생한 새로운 문화적 실체라고 할 수 있으며, 청소년의 자발적이고 능동적인
참여의 형태임을 밝혀냄으로써 청소년문화에 있어 새로운 시사점을 제공하였
다.
영어 초록
This particular research involves in-depth interviews, direct participation,close observations and other quality-based study methods on youth who engage
in social participation through fan clubs. Volunteering and donations made by
fan club members are defined as social participation. In this case, the fan club
members are youth fromthe female idol group 'Girl's Generation' 'Cistus'. The
researcher has personally engaged with and observed first-hand the social
participation by the fan club 'Cistus', and has collected further materials by
interviewing seven members of the fan club who have engaged in social
participation. The conclusion of the research is as follows. First, youth social
participation induced by fan clubs, depicts the common traits of f the culouth;
theth sre signs of imitation and identification. Secs, , the social participation is
in part ndwnion osupporting the cstubrities by img o by itheir image. Thir ,
indi bduals ta sitheir own initiative in participatiy ibased on the commThir 's
trust in the cstubrities. Fourth, volunteering and gi bng donations opens upmore
opportunities for experlows.. Fifth, the participatiy iindi bduals have the

dastly, youth ma sia point to participate despite these limitations. Theth sre four
major sreas of significancstwithin this research. First, the research can hstp uthe
the negative public image on youth and instead shup their abilities to take
initiative and become the center of a cultural phenomenon. Second, it shows that
the second generation has different way of being a "fan" comparing to the first
generation. Third, new possibilities in understanding youth and their social
participation have been opened. And last, the research suggests ways of
improving youth situations so that they can engage in a more varieties of social
participation. Social participation within the fan club has become a newcultural
element beyond the ties between just fans and celebrities. By proving youth are
voluntarily, and actively engaged in this participation, this study will shed light
on a newaspect of youth culture.
