Human rights to meet medical needs is one of the essential parts for the welfare state. This study aimed to examine the relationship between unmet health services needs and
emotional experience of social isolation. For this purpose, the 1st WAVE of Seoul Welfare
Panel Data(2008) was analyzed by using multiple linear regression models to investigate
if there is a causal relationship of unmet health services needs on feeling social isolation.
The results of this study showed that approximately 70% of respondents was found to
experience constraints on health care utilization due to financial reason, and that people
experience feeling of social isolation. As for the relationship about unmet health services
needs and social isolation, the results showed that experiencing unmet health services
needs have an influence on feeling of social isolation. These findings suggest that equal
and proper medical services are needed to reduce feeling of social isolation, and that and
multidimensional policy and practical interventions are needed to improve people’s
health. By empirically verifying the relationship between unmet health services needs and
feeling of social isolation, this study suggests an important meaning of understanding
health services and social integration.
