This study analyzed the student types of identified regulation and intrinsic regulation motivation ofstudents with low achievement in a transition from middle school to high school, and explored the
differences of teacher-student and peer relationships among student types. Data from 3th and 5th
year Korea Educational Longitudinal Study(KELS) was used in this study. 523 students with LA
including 336 male and 187 female participated in this study. This study classified students into four
groups such as Low-Low(LL), Low-High(LH), High-Low(HL), and High-High(HH). The results of this
study revealed that the overall mean of self-determined motivation was under 3. In identified
regulation, HH was the highest, 48.8% and LH was only 9.9%. About intrinsic regulation, LL was
41.3% and LH was 17.4%. About relational variables, in identified regulation student-teacher
relationship and peer relationship were significantly different among groups. However, in intrinsic
regulation there was no significant differences. Based on such findings, educational implications were
made that relationship could be meaningful variables to enhance students' self-determined motivation
in a transition from middle school to high school.
