The cross flow past two circular cylinders has been long studied in connection with FIV
(flow induced vibration) problems in a tube array or tube bundle. Of special interest is the variation of the mode of vortex generation according to the spacing of two cylinders. As far as two circular cylinders in tandem arrangement are concerned, Thomas & Kraus1 reported already in 1964 that there is a drastic change in vortex mode at a critical spacing of about L/d = 3.5 to 3.9. This was first recognized as a jump of drag and wake frequency curves and then confirmed by some flow visualization experiments,
