IntroductionVitamin D(cholecalciferol)는 장에서 칼슘(calcium)과 인(phosphorus)의 흡수를 도와주기 때문에 뼈의 건강을 위해서 꼭 필요한 영양소이다. Vitamin D는 햇빛을 통해 피부에서 주로 합성된다. 그러므로 계절과 위도, 피부색, 선크림 사용 유무, 그리고 옷과 나이 등에 의해서 Vitamin D의 합성이 영향을 받게 된다. Vitamin D의 체내 농도는 serum내 25-hydroxyvitamin D[25(OH)D;calciferol]의 양을 측정함으로써 알 수 있다. Serum내 25(OH)D의 농도가 50nmol/L(20ng/mL)이하이면 Vitamin D 결핍으로 판단하는데, 골다공증 환자에게서 Vitamin D 결핍증상이 주로 나타난다. Vitamin D가 부족하게 되면 골다공증(osteoporosis)과 골연화증(osteomalacia), 그리고 골절(fracture)이 쉽게 일어난다. 또한 Vitamin D 부족은 근육을 약하게 하기 때문에 Vitamin D가 부족하게 되면 Vitamin D가 들어있는 약을 통해서 치료를 해야 한다. 골다공증으로 치료를 받고 있는 환자는 피부에서 스스로 합성하는 Vitamin D이외에 추가로 음식이나 약을 통해서 Vitamin D를 흡수함으로써 그 효과를 극대화 시켜야 한다[2].
이처럼 Vitamin D는 태어나서부터 죽을 때까지 뼈 발달과 유지를 위해서 꼭 필요하다. 그러나 소아과의사들이 어린이들에게서 구루병을 유발할 수 있는 Vitamin D 부족에 대해서 경고를 하는 반면, 내과의사들은 Vitamin D의 양에 대해서 무관심한 경우가 있다. Vitamin D부족은 골연화증과 골다공증을 악화시킬 뿐 아니라 뼈와 근육을 약하게 만들어 골절이 쉽게 일어날 수 있게 할 수 있기 때문에 항상 vitamin D가 부족하지 않도록 주의해야 한다[2].

생체 기관을 물리적으로 지탱하고, 골수를 보호하며, 혈청의 항상성 유지 기능을 하는 칼슘과 인의 저장고이기도 한 뼈는 살아 있는 조직으로 결합조직의 한 형태이다.
