본 논문은 크지슈토프 보디츠코(Krzysztof Wodiczko, 1943-)의 공공 프로젝션 작업을 <나의 소원 My Wish>(2017)을 중심으로 살펴본 연구이다. 폴란드 태생 예 술가인 보디츠코는 산업디자이너로 활동하며 국가의 검열과 정치제도에 대한 비판적 견해를 바탕으로 정형화된 이데올로기를 공공장소에서 폭로하고자 했다. 사회 비판 적 작업을 지속적으로 진행하던 보디츠코는 고국의 탄압을 받게 되고 1977년 캐나 다로 망명하게 되는데, 이후 본격적으로 공공 프로젝션 형태의 공공미술 작품을 제작 하기 시작했다. 그의 공공 프로젝션 작업은 특정 장소나 오브제가 갖는 의미와 맞물 리며 작가의 의도와 메시지가 보다 함축적으로 관객에게 전달되기에 공공미술 연구 에서 중요하다. 따라서 본고에서는 보디츠코의 공공프로젝션 작업 배경과 작가의 예 술관이 반영된 <나의 소원>(2017)을 파레지아(Parrhesia)적 구성과 공론장 형성, 공 공 프로젝션과 트라우마 극복의 함의, 공적 공간의 이데올로기라는 세 가지 키워드를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 예술의 사회적 역할을 평생에 걸쳐 고민해온 보디츠코에게 공공 프로젝션 작업의 파레지아적 구성은 매우 효과적이다. 예술은 사회에서 소외된 사람들의 목소리를 통 해 각종 문제를 공론화시키고 트라우마를 극복하도록 도와주는 상호소통의 도구가 된다. 따라서 보디츠코의 작품은 관객과 상호소통적인 장치이다. 그의 공공 프로젝션 작업들은 가시성의 창조적 확산과 강화를 위해 매개물로 작동하는 것을 목적으로 한 다. <나의 소원>은 보디츠코가 2017년 한국에서 아시아 최초 회고전을 개최하며 출 품한 작품으로 갈등과 상처가 만들어내는 다양한 발화를 담으며 사회 변혁적 실천의 방식을 제시했다. 이때 장소 특정적 맥락을 보여주던 과거의 작업에서 나아가 미술관 을 전시공간으로 선택하며 제도적 기관이 또 다른 공공장소가 되기를 바라는 의지를 피력했다. 결국 보디츠코의 공공 프로젝션 작업은 사회 비판적 개입이 공적 공간을 사회적 이슈를 논쟁하는 민주적 공간으로 변화시키고자 한다는 점에서 진보된 형태 의 공공미술로 평가할 수 있다.

영어 초록

This paper is a study on the public projection work of Krzysztof Wodiczko(1943-) focusing on the case of <My Wish>(2017). A Polish-born artist, Wodiczko, worked as an industrial designer and tried to expose stereotyped ideologies in public based on critical views on the state censorship and political system. Wodiczko, who had been continuously conducting socially critical works, was oppressed by his homeland and exiled to Canada in 1977. After that, he began to produced public art works in the form of public projection in earnest. His public projection works are important in public art research because they are aligned with the meaning of a specific place or object, and the artist’s intentions and messages are more implicitly delivered to the audience. Therefore, in this paper, the case of <My Wish>, which reflects the background of Wodiczko’s public projection work and his artistic view, is focused on three keywords; the composition of Parrhesia and the formation of the public sphere, the implication of public projection and overcoming the trauma, and the ideology of public space. For an artist who has been contemplating the social role of art through life, the Parrhesia composition of public projection works is very effective. Art becomes a tool for mutual communication that helps people overcome trauma and publicize various problems through the voices of those who are marginalized in society. Therefore, Wodiczko’s work is an interactive device with the audience. His public projection works aim to act as a medium for creative diffusion and reinforcement of visibility. <My Wish> is a work that Wodiczko submitted during the first Asian retrospective exhibition in Korea, and it contains various utterances created by conflict and wounds. And it suggests a way of socially transforming practice. At this time, going beyond the past works that showed a site-specific context, he selected an art museum as an exhibition space and expressed his wish for the institutional institution to become another public space. In the end, Wodiczko’s public projection work can be evaluated as an advanced form of public art in that social critical intervention seeks to transform public space into a democratic space where social issues are debated.
