Abstract
We prepared and characterized several oxides in layered and tunnel structure based on the TiO6
octahedra with alkali metals (Na, K) as interstitials, which are known for high catalytic activity
for water photolysis. The nominal compositions prepared by the solid state reaction method
were K2Ti4O9, K2Ti6O13, Na2Ti3O7 and Na2Ti6O13. From the X-ray diffraction patterns most
samples were found to form a mixture with the phase of less alkali content in the phase diagram
of K2O-TiO2 and Na2O-TiO2. The phase distribution was also indicated in the microstructure.
The layered and tunnel structure titanates were characterized by the pronounced formation of
elongated grains according to the crystallographic anisotropy. Impedance spectroscopy has been
applied to distinguish the electrical conductivity from the low frequency polarization effects.
Apparent bulk conductivity thus obtained exhibits the activation energy values between 0.75 eV
and 1 eV.
