Investigating the structure of DNA
Yu Jin Kim
Purpose: To determine the structure of DNA
Introduction: DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid, is the hereditary material in human and all other organisms. It is the genetic material that can be passed on to the next generation. There are three parts that compose a DNA: Base, Phosphate and Sugar. The information in DNA is stored as a code made up of four chemical bases: Adenine (A), Guanine (G), Cytosine (C), and Thymine (T). Each DNA bases pair up with each other, A with T and C with G. The bases are linked together with hydrogen bond. The base pairs are attached to a sugar molecule and phosphate molecule. Sugar and Phosphate are linked together with covalent bond. Together a base, sugar and phosphate are called a nucleotide.
Materials and Method: -CarlinaBiokit (DNA)
For the materials of the experiment, we used a model called CarlinaBiokit (DNA) and assembled what we think the structure of DNA is based on our guess. We assumed that each color of the model as a base, sugar, phosphate and hydrogen bond. Green was A, orange was T, Yellow was G, Blue was C, white tube for hydrogen bond, White for sugar, and red for phosphate.
