is very interesting place and period to know more about ‘art’. Reading Ode on a Grecian Urn and connecting it with ‘art’ was interesting activity. While connecting them, three concepts of art were found in the poem. They were: sculpture and poetry, and beauty. All of these concepts are inside a poem and it is all intertwined.
First concept is between sculpture and poetry in art. ‘Thou foster-child of silence and slow time…heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on….’ In ancient Greece, there were two forms of art. One was ‘constructive art’ as sculptures or temples and the other one was ‘expressive art’ such as poetry, acting and singing. The Greeks thought that constructive form of art was more sacred, elegance and important than expressive art because, as indicated at the poem, it long-lasted and never changed, which lead to eternity and more advanced level of soul.
