이 장의 제목처럼 테스는 지난날의 실수로 많은 시련과 고난으로 지내게 됩니다. 지난날의 일들을 에인젤에게 신혼 첫 날밤에 고백합니다. 그 고백을 듣고 에인젤은 테스를 떠나게 되는 것입니다.
