James Sire, the author of ‘The universe next door’, in his book deals with the major worldviews, each in a separate chapter. He explains the basic tenets of the worldviews and how Christian worldview relates with each of them. Now that we are on to the later chapters of the book, it tackles the conflicting worldviews of existentialism and Eastern pantheistic monism.
Chapter 6 covers existentialism along with its basic tenets. Its basic tenets are
The cosmos is composed solely of matter, but to human beings reality appears in two forms - subjective and objective.
For human beings alone, existence precedes essence; people make themselves who they are.
Each person is totally free as regards their nature and destiny.
The highly wrought and tightly organized objective world stands over against human beings and appears absurd.
In full recognition of and against the absurdity of the objective world, the authentic person must revolt and create value.
