① Writing paragraphs of comparison and contrast about context
“Los Angeles vs. San Francisco”
- Teacher present ways to organize compare and contrast paragraphs.
- Students to elicit, and brainstorm about differences and organizational plan.
② Five week CBI unit centered on content of urban issues
- All language instruction(grammar, vocabulary, writing) is conducted using the content of urban issues as a point of departure.
- Thus, students might study the grammar of conditional sentences within the context of urban crime (“If police efforts were more community-based, the inhabitants of that community would not perceive the police as enemies”)
☞ Effects ① Language is being continually recycled throughout the unit.
☞ Effects ② Students are given multiple opportunities to use the new
language they acquire as they read, discuss, and write about the topics.
