The fear of negative evaluation (FNE) is considered a cardinal feature of social anxiety and social anxiety disorder (APA, 2004; Leary, 1983). The FNE has been defined as “apprehension about others' evaluations, distress over their negative evaluations, and the expectation that others would evaluate oneself negatively” (p.179; Weeks et al., 2004; cf. p.449; Watson & Friend, 1969). This definition appears to include probability overestimation, the likelihood that others would evaluate oneself negatively, as well as social cost overestimation, the negative valence that an individual assigns to particular social events (i.e., “distress over their negative evaluations”). Although the FNE construct incorporates both appraisal dimensions, it is unclear as to whether measures of FNE, such as the brief version of the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale (BFNES; Leary, 1983), actually assess probability overestimation, social cost overestimation, or both.
