Author F. Scott Fitzgerald remarkably demonstrates contradiction of the American dream in his glamorous novel The Great Gatsby. The utopian notion of the American Dream is introduced by James Truslow Adams in his book The Epic of America: "Life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement… regardless of social class or circumstances of birth” (404). The American Dream looks realizable and idealistic, but it contains contradictive aspects, which is reckless and illegal means of acquiring wealth. In the 1920, after World War I and before the Great Depression, Americans’ traditional notions and values were threatened through experiencing unprecedented prosperity and materialistic society: the stock market flourished, extravagance spread, and morality become paralyzed. Jay Gatsby who was really James Gatz, the hero, is depicted as a man who gets benefits as well as ruin to achieve the American dream.
