The Swatch Group is one of the biggest company in the watch industry based in Biel, Switzerland. It designs, manufactures, sells and distributes finished watches, watch movements, watch components, electronic systems and jewelry.
The Swatch Group was founded in 1983 by Nicolas Hayek who was the CEO of a consulting firm. In 1970s Swiss watch industry was in a crisis. From the release of the first quartz watch made by a Japanese company Seiko in 1969, relatively cheap watches started to be made in Asia. During that period, many of the Swiss watch brands that based on traditional watch making style went bankrupt and master craftsmen scattered. In that situation, Hayek took over two Swiss watchmakers, which were ASUAG(Allgemeine Schweizerische Uhrenindustrie AG) and SSIH(Societe Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogere).
After the merger, Hayek established SMH(Swiss Corporation for Microelectronics and Watch making Industries Ltd). SMH released ‘Swatch’ which meant second watch that showed high performance and artistic value at the same time.
