본문내용
A narrator in Ralph Ellison’s novel Invisible man remembers photographs of men and women who are more like signs or symbols almost without individuality in the library (39). His view reveals that they are put together without personal distinctions as controlled people. So it shows that the black people are viewed as “instruments” (“the new instrument of the committee’s authority” [363]) and used as “raw materials to be shaped to the program” (472). That is, even if the black people were set free from slavery, they still remain as “mechanical men” (94) or “machines” (“No, I won’t be needing the machine” [108]) to be controlled and “conform to a pattern” (576) in “the dream world” (14). To keep them in this position, the white people operate
and manipulate the black people thoroughly. Because the system that the white people maintain is dominant and prevailing, the black people can’t recognize the truth and “live a death” (7).
