1. 이론의 배경1) 이론가 소개
1923년 아이오와주 웨스트 포인드에서 태여났다.
1945년 미주리주 세인트 루이스에 있는 세인트 존 병원의 간호고등학교를 졸업하고 간호사 자격증을 받았다.
1948년 세인트 루이스대학교에서 간호교육학 학사학위를 받았다.
1957년 세인트 루이스대학교에서 간호학 석사학위를 받았다.
1947~1958년 세인트 존 병원 간호학과의 내외과간호학 강사와 부 부서장을 역임하였다.
1961년 뉴욕 콜럼비아대학교 교육대학에서 Mildred Montag 교수 지도하에 교육학 박사학위를 받았다.
1964년 간호이론가 Martha Rogers가 편집하는 Nursing Science에 킹의 첫 번째 이론 논문이 실렸다.
1961~1966년 시카고 로욜라대학교 간호학과의 부교수였으며 재직기간 동안 간호 개념틀을 기본으로 하는 간호학 석사과정을 개설하였다.
1968~1972년 콜럼버스의 오하이오 주립대학교의 간호학과장으로 재직하였다. 오하이오 주립대학교에 있는 동안 “Toward a Theory for Nursing: General Concept of Human Behavior” 저서를 발간하였다.
1972년 시카고 로욜라대학교의 대학원 교수로 돌아왔다.
1978~1980년 로욜라 의학센터에서 간호부의 임상간호연구 코디네이터로 근무하였다.
1980년 남일리노이대학교에서 명예 박사학위를 수여하였다.
1998년 킹의 “Nursing Collection”이 소장된 로욜라대학교에서 명예박사학위를 받았다.
1980년 플로리다주 탬파로 이주하여 남플로리다대학교 간호학과 교수로 근무하였다.
1981년 집필한 두 번째 저서 “A Theory for Nursing: Systems, Concepts, Process”를 출간하였다.
1986년 세 번째 저서인 “Curriculum and Instruction in Nursing: Concept and Process”를 출간하였다.
