The 1920s might be the most intriguing age in the history of the United States of America because the period was characterized by indisputable contradictions. In other words, although the 1920s were comparatively peaceful and prosperous, it was the period in which certainty and uncertainty, order and chaos, and satisfaction and restlessness existed all together: “It was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire,” Fitzgerald wrote in “Echoes of the Jazz Age.” These contradictions are integrated and symbolized in the novel as the corrupted “American dream” that decayed the social and moral values of Americans. In the middle of this materialistic and shallow world, readers might ask the question, what is it that makes Jay Gatsby great? F.
