Military service, which directly affects our lives, may not at first seem compatible with Christianity or with faith in God. Reading through the Bible, however, we can begin to understand God’s role in our lives: “And he is before all things, and by him all things consist” (NIV, Colossians 1:17). God is certainly involved in every affair of men, and especially of his people. The proper Christian attitude toward war, therefore, must be considered. For Christians, who are clearly commanded, “Thou shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13), it may seem sacrilegious and wicked to participate in war, or even to be part of the military whose purpose necessarily involves killing and death. There may be many Christians who serve in the army, participate in wars, kill, and possibly die in the service. Those Christians might suffer from compartmentalizing their faith and sometimes even feel ashamed of themselves for taking away people’s lives. However, there is a clear-cut difference between killing and murder, which depends upon whether or not someone’s life is taken with an unlawful and intentional goal.
