eTEC Engineering & Construction, or eTEC in short, is a construction company whose main service is building industrial facilities such as petrochemical plants, power plants, and manufacturing factories. The company's strength is in its EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Commissioning) turn-key service which means the company provides everything for its client, from designing and procurement to commissioning and mechanical completion of a facility. All the client has to do is simply "turning the key" to operate the facility. This research is mainly concerned with the second part of EPC, the procurement. As one of the three letters that stand for the company's strength, the procurement plays a critical role. It purchases materials, machineries and equipment necessary for construction, ensures they meet required technical designs and expedites their lead time to meet the construction schedule, but most of all, the crux of procurement is its ability to increase the profitability of the projects by reducing costs. The key is negotiation.
