본문내용
“What do you do when you encounter with new unfamiliar words?”
- Students in a group do survey activity
- Possible answers: Writing new words several times to memorize them, making a list and trying to memorize them one by one, etc.
“Smaller than words!”
- Words are made of smaller units that each carries specific meanings: roots and affixes (prefixes and suffixes; derivational and inflectional)
- If we understand how words are composed of, it would be easy to guess the meaning of new words and remember them.
“What are they?”
- Roots: they carry the basic meaning (ex. happiness, sadness, childish, healthy, beautiful, already, forehead, etc.)
- Affixes
1) Prefixes: they are attached at the front of the roots (ex. unhappiness, return, unfilled, cooccur, etc.)
2) Suffixes: they are attached at the end of the roots (ex. action, actor, active, childhood, childish, childless, etc.)
3) Inflectional affixes: they have the function of marking grammatical properties of words;
