본문내용
Osmosis is a passive process that transports water across a semi-permeable membrane from an area of high water potential to an area of low water potential (Adam-Day). Cells are not only full of a water-based solution inside their membrane; they are also surrounded by water-based solutions on the outside. At any one time, a cell will be bathed in one of three types of solution (relative to the solution of its own cytoplasm): Hypertonic, hypotonic and isotonic solutions. Figure 1 demonstrates what will happen to the movement of water in each case:
A solution is hypertonic compared to the cytoplasm of a cell if it contains more dissolved particles than the cytoplasm; a hypotonic solution contains less dissolved particles. A common salt that readily dissolves in water is sodium chloride (NaCl). Sodium (Na+ ) and chloride (Cl- ) are both ions that are involved in crucial cellular processes. E.g. Na+ is involved in sending nerve impulses through neurons (Allot & Mindorff, p321).
