2. Design
Design of gas liquefaction train based on Shell DMR technology (Fig 3). First application of this technology was successfully implemented by Shell on Sakhalin LNG plant in Russia in 2009. Novelty limited to offshore application.
The difference with Sakhalin plant is that all compressor drivers on Prelude will be steam turbines instead of gas turbines. Power generation also steam turbine driven and consists of 3 machines 40 Mw each. High pressure steam supplied by 7 marine boilers. Heat rejection from 3-stage pre-cool PMR and MR (main) refrigerant circuits is based on sea water heat exchangers, to eliminate massive series of air fin fan coolers. Plant layout is arranged in modules and squeezed to 25% of onshore based LNG train footprint.
To improve efficiency and minimise motion/sloshing effects, Liquefaction process on Prelude arranged in dense phase under 90 bar natural gas pressure. Unlike onshore plants with their LNG transfer pumps to storage, on Prelude product rundown will be drained by gravity directly to 6 tanks in hull.
