Meal composition and nutritional concernsMuslims live in about 50 countries including Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt, and Algeria. Each country has diverse food cultures and specific recipes, but most Muslims commonly fast and pray during Ramadan except for prepubescent children, pregnant women, and patients (Bernieh et al., 1994). One of the countries which is composed of the majority of Muslims is Algeria. The national meals of Alegria are grains, meats, (especially lamb and chicken) soups, vegetables, and dairy products. Couscous is the most famous and the national meal which is made of steamed wheat and vegetables with lamb or chicken and gravy. They enjoy eating spicy soup, called dolma, which is made of tomatoes and peppers. They usually use onion, red pepper, turnips, raisins, salt, and cilantro as seasonings (Countries and their Cultures, n.d.).
During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from water as well as food during long periods of sunshine.
