Character Review
The movie Dead Poets Society showed adolescents' identity crises in a highly competitive academy, Welton Academy. Neil Perry, one of the main characters of Dead Poets Society, was an adolescent who was facing a conflict between him and his dad regarding what he wanted to do. Neil found his passion for acting while his dad wanted him to focus on academic abilities so that Neil could get into Harvard University and ultimately into medical school. The task he was facing was identity versus role diffusion. Neil’s dad, Thomas Perry, was an adult whose task was generativity versus stagnation.
Defense Mechanisms
Throughout the movie, Neil showed the two most used defense mechanisms: suppression and denial. When Neil discovered the advertisement looking for an actor for the role ‘Puck’ from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, he expressed his excitement to his roommate, Todd Anderson. Neil was excited that he had finally found what he wanted to do.
