1. Discuss whether the ‘Asian values’ hypothesis is a useful tool for analyzing East Asian politics.
Based on my experience living in East Asia, I have learned about how the unity and sacrifice we have done as a country revived the national economy since my childhood. As much as the Koreans think of the incidents very proudly, the world’s interest on the Asian values were teeming, and the discussions on Asian Values have been active since the mid-1990s. Furthermore, the Asian Value was presented as an alternative postmodern idea to overcome the limitations of Western liberal democracy and individualism. Historically, however, since the World War II, discussions on Asian values have been booming along with the rising economic conditions of Asian countries.
