Beside the similarity between Cordelia and her sisters, there is definite distinction. Cordelia is sincerely faithful to her father whereas Goneril and Regan pretend to be loyal to Lear. When Lear questions his daughters, Cordelia says “So young, my lord, and true.”(1.1108); in contrary, after Goneril replies with all the sweet words like “I love you more than words can wield the matter”( 1.1.54) and Regan also says “[I] find I am alone felicitate in your dear highness’ love” (1.1.75-76), her sisters start to treat Lear coldly. For example, when Lear and his two daughters argue about how many servants he can bring, Goneril and Regan keep insisting on reducing the number and finally Regan says “What need one?”(2.4.261) The fact that Goneril and Regan pretend to be faithful in the beginning of the play becomes more obvious when Lear leaves Gloucester’s house. Although the daughters know that their father has no place to go and stay, Regan says “to willful men, the injuries that they themselves procure must be their schoolmasters. Shut up your doors”(2.4.300-301).
