I would like to present the South Korean film ‘The king and the clowns’ which has sold more than 12 million tickets and has become the third-most popular film ever in South Korea. Statistically, that indicates one in four South Koreans have seen the film.
Korea’s image is generally based on the Korean War or on its very rapid economic growth to foreigners. However we have 4500 years of fabulous history. This film is set in the region of during the early 1500s Korea. I hope this presentation can give you a chance to help you know and understand the traditional cultural Korea.
The film talks about two clowns; one of them (Gong-gil) looks like a woman, another (Jang-saeng) is masculine. Jang-saeng created a hit performance which ridiculed the king and his famous concubine Noksu, so they were arrested. But they had a chance to live if they satisfied the king with their performances by making him laugh. After a couple of performances, however, the king became more cruel and to love Gong-gil.
In fact, this film is based on a fictional story that was motivated by a short excerpt from the local play “Yi”. The excerpt was from the historical king Yeonsan’s diary during the Choseon dynasty. Although the king Yeonsan became an oppressive and cruel leader after his mother’s death, he was also known as a womanizer and strange character. According to historical scholars,
