In 『Hamlet』, hero Hamlet has the mission which is the revenge for the murder of his father, the previous king. While Hamlet pursues his mission, he finds that the people as well as the country of Denmark are polluted. The originary cause of this pollution is the murder of the late king. This paper studies how Shakespeare uses the images of poison and pollution and in the play.
The background of 『Hamlet』 is the Castle Elsinore in Denmark in the Middle Ages. In the beginning of this play, Ghost of previous king who is Hamlet`s father entrances on the stage, which shows a important and original key that grasps the actual situation.
…… Sleeping within my orchard,
My custom always of the afternoon,
Upon my secure hour thy uncle stole,
With juice of cursed hebenon in a vial,
And in the porches of my ears did pour
The leperous distilment; …… (1.5.59-64)
The poison which is poured into previous king`s ear spreads rapidly into king`s body through and through during he is sleeping. And his organs of healthy body are broken. Though occurrence of ghost is at Act 1, it develops into central symbol of this play.
