The Death penalty has been a controversial idea. Some people believe that race and economic status influence the decision of giving someone a death penalty. In The Death Penalty written by Miss Preet, she sites a major the argument on the role of race and economic status that people maintain: “The death penalty is unlawfully distributed; race plays an important factor in who will be sentenced to die. In Maryland, 80 percent of the inmates on death row are black, while blacks only make up 25 percent of the population in that state.” In opposition to Miss Preet’s initial argument, I believe that her later statement is more fitting and judicial in regards to the death penalty.

There is debate over the morals and effectiveness of such a harsh sentence. Most commonly, the death penalty is a clear violation of the Eighth Amendment; whish says that the U.S. cannot use “cruel and unusual” punishment. Due to the fact that “Punishment” is a legal infliction of suffering, it must be somewhat “cruel.”
