•The larger the specimen → The greater this flaw existence probability
→ The lower the fracture strength
•Compressive stress : No stress amplification
- Ceramics much higher strengths in compression than in tension
- Thermal Tempering : Brittle ceramic enhanced by imposing residual compressive stress

2. Stress – Strain Behavior
•Difficult to prepare required geometry
•Difficult to grip brittle materials
→ Ceramics is not ascertained by tensile test
→ Use ‘Transverse bending test’
