`Abstract
A big dispute between the two countries in international trade is a worldwide issue. It is the trade war between China and the US. The primary purpose of trade wars in the history has been to protect national interests from external influences. This essay starts with the argument that protectionism should be avoided. There are three supportive reasons that uphold this argument. Then, an opposing argument is introduced which advocates protectionism. In conclusion, it stresses that protectionism does not, in the long term, promote growth or benefits of both domestic and the world’s economy
Key Words: protectionism, international trade
