Economic development leads —fairly quickly—to democracy. The argument, runs like this: economic growth produces an educated and entrepreneurial middle class that, sooner or later, begins to demand control over its own fate. Eventually, even repressive governments are forced to give in. Or vice versa. A well educated and entrepreneurial middle class through democracy leads to economic development as people increasingly demand economic liberties. Which one is right? Democracy first, or democracy later? This has been one of the most widely debated topics during the last decade in the area of international studies. Many experts and professionals still have very different views regarding which is better over which. This paper will focus on two main regions, Latin America and East Asia, to compare their political and economic development. Generally Latin American countries have been more democratic whereas East Asian countries have achieved higher rates of economic growth throughout the postwar period.
