최근 정보기술의 발전과 더불어 활발히 논의되고 있는 가상교육은 이전의 새로운 공학적 매체가 등장했을 때처럼 많은 관심의 대상이 되고 있다. 특히, 대학교육에서의 가상교육은 ‘가상대학’의 형태로 구체적으로 구축되어 운영되고 있다. 일부 전통적인 캠퍼스 중심 대학들은 이 가상대학이 미래의 정보화 사회에 적합한 대학교육의 모형으로 인식하고 있다. 본고에서는 가상교육의 대표적인 형태인 가상대학이 캠퍼스 중심의 전통적 대학을 대치할 새로운 형태의 교육기관이 될 수 있는지를 비판적인 관점에서 논의하였다.이를 위해, 본고에서는 가상대학의 고유한 특성이 캠퍼스 중심의 대학에 비해 효율적인 교육을 실시하는데 기여하는지를 비판적으로 검토하였다. 이와 더불어, 가상대학이 원격교육이 아닌 강의실 활동을 지원하는 구체적인 방안을 제시함으로써, 현재의 캠퍼스 중심 대학들이 미래의 고등교육을 주도할 적합한 대학으로 변모할 수 있을 것임을 밝혔다.

영어 초록

The purpose of this article was to examine whether the virtual university will replacethe traditional campus - based univers ity and become the dominant higher educationalinstitute by criticizing the attributes of the virtual university mentioned in various studies. In addition, it was aimed at proposing how to utilize the virtual educational environment in order for the campus - based university to enhance learning- teaching activities and keep playing the dominant role in the future higher education.Recently, virtual univers ity has attracted a great amount of interests as the technologies did when appeared for the firs t time in the history. Most of the traditional campus - based universities have participated in constructing their own virtual university, as suming that the virtual university will prevail in the future higher education. This movement seemed to be based on the as sumptions that the virtual university would be a better educational environment than the traditional because of the distinct capabilities of the environment such as no physical barriers, various interactions, and learner- centered.Although the future higher education will be affected and changed by the virtual universities, it was predicted that the future higher education still require the campus equipped universities without physical facilities will exist and provide the opportunity for only the student who can't attend the campus - based.This forecast was derived from the following discussions. First, the virtual campus could not enhance learning better than the real campus when the physical barriers were not a problem. Second, virtual universities would requires more time and efforts from ins tructors to keep the s ame level of the interaction between student and ins tructors as those at the real campus. Third, it has been reported that students wereless effective when they had more controls over the instructional activities.It was proposed that different perspectives needed for the campus - based universities to take advantage of the virtual university. The virtual university should be built in order to remove the barriers to better learning and teaching, not the campus. The virtual univers ity should also be introduced to help the campus - based instructional activities more effective and efficient.It was suggested that the virtual univers ity could be used as a tool for knowledge building activities, asynchronous learning support, new instructional methods, and a supplement of large classes. Inconclusion, campus - based universities would be more effective and efficient by integrating the virtual university with a view to enhance campus - based learning and teaching activities, not replacing the ones, and will continue to prosper in the information age.
