As we expect the WEA World Convention in 2014, I'd like tocompare Paul's mission in the first century with today's missions
and then to suggest some practical ideas to apply Paul's mission
principles to the present Korean mission field. Since the early 20th
century, the Western and domestic mission scholars have achieved
many insightful studies of Paul's mission. While referring to these,
I try to analyze the principles of Paul's mission in five parts and
compare them with Korean church missions, in order to suggest
the future direction of Korean mission.
The first principle of Paul's mission is that Paul preached
faithfully the substance of Gospel. The core contents of the Gospel
that Paul preached were death and resurrection of Jesus Christ,
repentance, deliverance, the Advent of Christ and Judgment. The
second principle is that Paul's mission was done with the power
and lead of Holy Spirit. Paul did not plan any missions according to
the human reality and desire but only followed the lead of Holy
Spirit. Thirdly, Paul's was a team ministry. Here once again Paul
faithfully followed Jesus Christ's example and consequently his
ministry became much more effective. Fourthly, Paul's mission was
centered on some strategic base cities. Paul did so mainly during
and after his second mission travel, hence spreading the Gospel
more effectively around such base cities. Lastly, Paul's was a
contextualization ministry. In other words, it is an attitude to let
himself adapt to the culture code of the recipients of the Gospel
and build native churches.
With Paul's principles in mind, let us analyze the present reality
of Korean mission. First, Korean missionaries preached the
substance of Gospel strongly in the beginning days of Korean
missions, but that passion has been diminished while missionary
methods were being diversified. Therefore, I think that the church
planting missionaries and other project missionaries should
cooperate together. Second, we should avoid doing mission only
with human plan; we should spread the Gospel with the power
and lead of Holy Spirit. Third, Korean missionaries feel team
ministry very difficult. In order to overcome this problem, we
should include in our missionary training programs crosscultural
discussion and team workshops. It is also needed that we develop
a team ministry appropriate for Korean missionaries. Fourth,
today's world is being rapidly changed and urbanized. Cities have
a lot of problems, and urban people are readier to accept the
Gospel than rural people. Therefore, we have to concentrate more
on cities and develop projects for city mission. Then we can go
gradually to unreached people. Fifth, Korean missionaries are
usually reluctant to build native leadership. They are often in a
position of the senior pastor for too long a time. In order to build
genuine local churches, we should build up native leadership.
Korean churches which support missionaries have also a deep
understanding about the contextualization. Korean churches
should have more mature attitude about this; we should discard
the desire to show off visible achievements and the desire for
missionary-centered mission and sponsor-centered mission.
